another problem is that you are compressing it way too much with a single compressor - the best fix you can try is probably increasing the attack time on the volume of the synth so that it 'pre-ducks' and then use mild sidechain compression. you probably notaiced that the click can't be EQ'd out either, just muffled along with the rest of your sound. what you want to do is increase the attack/release on the compressor, although usually this achieves not what you're going for. you probably noticed you get the same problem with a sub bass when you have too fast of an attack or release on the volume envelope. So you are ducking the sound pretty heavily - the reason you're getting the clicks is because of the lower frequency sine wave - its got a longer period so the compressor is more likely to cut the signal at a non zero sharply due to your compressor settings. Even though I'd love to get around this somehow. It seems to me like it's just the nature of compressing.

Not sure what I'm supposed to say anymore. I tried a few at a friends place too and they are no different. I also demo'd some other ones and they all do the same. I also use Fabfilter's Pro-C, which creates the same type of clicking. But my problem is not only about Ableton's stock compressor. It doesn't actually solve my issue as much as go around it.Ībleton's compressor is pretty fast. Not being able to sidechain compress a sound with delay and reverb just doesn't make any sense, even though I understand the reason for it now. Without that (somewhat) big delay and reverb I am not able to get the desired effect I'm looking for. Sure I could use a sound without any effects, but most of the time it just won't do the thing it's supposed to.

But then again if I can't put any effects on my sidechained sound it's kind of pointless for me to begin with. Now I'm not sure if this is a good way to do it, but I have realized that with this chain of effects, the things in between the EQ's tend to bring out certain frequencies that I cut off using the first EQ, (what I suspect is the compressor and limiter) for example a complete highpass at 150hz, and therefor I needed to put another one in the end of it as well to get the desired effect.Īh yes, that makes sense. It varies a lot from sound to sound really. I sometimes change the order of the effects too depending on what I want, for example if I don't want that delay to be compressed with a sidechain effect I would either use a send fx or just put the delay after the compressor in the chain. If I want to then use an arpeggiated sound ducking that signal, I tend to make the sound in all its glory inside the VST, before I put any compressor or eq on, in the effects chain, it could look a little something like this depending on the sound EQ, delay, reverb, (various effects), compressor, limiter and then finally another EQ. I don't actually put any kind of effects on this track as I just loop it and mute it, then I go about and choose my kick drums for a separate track. I then put out the midi notes in a basic dance music fashion, put it out into the arrangement for quite a few bars just to have a space to start working in, and then I mute that track and tend not to do anything more with it. In the case of the sine wave I do clear what ever preset is loaded first in the vst and just choose a clear sine wave sound. I start with making either a drum rack for a kick drum sample, or a vst synth for a sine wave. Here's how I go about to set up my sidechain:
